But let us remember………extract from the Holy Father’s Stations of the Cross

The Ninth Station – The Third Fall – The Church

What can the third fall of Jesus under the Cross say to us? We have considered the fall of man in general, and the falling of many Christians away from Christ and into a godless secularism. Should we not also think of how much Christ suffers in his own Church? How often is the holy sacrament of his Presence abused, how often must he enter empty and evil hearts! How often do we celebrate only ourselves, without even realizing that he is there! How often is his Word twisted and misused! What little faith is present behind so many theories, so many empty words! How much filth there is in the Church, and even among those who, in the priesthood, ought to belong entirely to him! How much pride, how much self-complacency! What little respect we pay to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, where he waits for us, ready to raise us up whenever we fall! All this is present in his Passion. His betrayal by his disciples, their unworthy reception of his Body and Blood, is certainly the greatest suffering endured by the Redeemer; it pierces his heart. We can only call to him from the depths of our hearts: Kyrie eleison Lord, save us (cf. Mt 8: 25).

PRAYER

Lord, your Church often seems like a boat about to sink, a boat taking in water on every side. In your field we see more weeds than wheat. The soiled garments and face of your Church throw us into confusion. Yet it is we ourselves who have soiled them! It is we who betray you time and time again, after all our lofty words and grand gestures. Have mercy on your Church; within her too, Adam continues to fall. When we fall, we drag you down to earth, and Satan laughs, for he hopes that you will not be able to rise from that fall; he hopes that being dragged down in the fall of your Church, you will remain prostrate and overpowered. But you will rise again. You stood up, you arose and you can also raise us up. Save and sanctify your Church. Save and sanctify us all.

"[scandal] the key currency of political and moral infighting, the main means through which one dents institutions and people that one detests...[scandal] refashioned as a tool of ideological warfare against the Catholic faith, against a strain of theology that the Protestant-minded atheists of the literary and commentating sets have always found repulsive. Accusations of sexual wickedness have replaced political, moral or theological critiques to become the No1 shortcut to getting one over on people or groups you don't like."

"It is, nevertheless, against the Church of God, and above all against its Head, that all the spirits of evil in all ages, and, above all, in the present, direct the shafts of their enmity. We see, therefore, what it is that hinders the manifestation, the supremacy, and the dominion of the spirit of evil and of disorder upon earth — namely, the constituted order of Christendom, the supernatural society of which the Catholic Church is the creator, the bond of union, and the principle of conservation."

Mark Dowd raises the same issue that Damian Thompson covered in his Telegraph blog earlier this week. Unfortunately the Daily Mail and other latch on to these remarks and sensationalise them. I think we're just going to have to hold on to our seats. It's going to a bumpy ride.

The thing is Mark O'Dowd's comments cut both ways. The question has to be asked why are there so many gay men all in one place? Given that they represent 1.5% of the population its a bit of a coincidence. It makes Michael Rose's view in Goodbye Good Men that liberal gay men are acting as the gate keepers in the seminaries (at least in America) seem more credible. It also makes the existence of a 'lavender mafia' of some kind not seem so paranoid.

The LGBT's are now getting to a critical point. Up till now they've been given the benefit of the doubt but I wonder how long that will last? The temptation must be growing among the MSM to print what up till now has been the unprintable and make connections which are surely becoming more obvious. A journalist wouldn't have to look around too long on the internet to see the story. To me the LGBTs could just be gettig to the point where they push their luck too far.

I can sympathize with Brendan O’Neill. Perhaps it is because here in the US we have been dealing with this for a longer time than most other places, we were already sated some time ago. Now further revelations, exposes and ‘breaking news’ don’t really trouble us much. “Been there, done that” is sort of the attitude. Welcome to the post-Original Sin world!

This too shall pass…and will probably be replaced by some other ‘scandal’ yet to be discovered.

I expect that in post-Henry VIII Britain, through Elizabeth, Cromwell and following, English Catholics (and Scots and Irish as well) felt it was the end of the world or the demise of the Church. Yet the Faith endured and gave many martyrs to the Church. And the Church survived. The light flickered but did not go out.

Are our travails worse than theirs? Hardly. The Gates of Hell will never prevail…but they will continue to try as long as we’re here. Which is why our hope is not in this life, but in the next.
